I am intrigued by things that are seemingly normal but are also
not pleasant to look at—I like making the unpleasant, pleasant.
Photographs in my Morning Routine series focus on just that.
The series, which is experimental in nature, examines elements of a monotonous routine.
Rather than photographing just the objects or the actions associated with them,
I wanted to mix it up a little bit. In "Combs," I make visible strands of hair, oil stains, edge control,
lotion, etc. with the combs. It now tells the story of my routine as a Black woman.
The images in this series are shot against a bright pink background, which creates a
contrast between what's considered by society as soft/pretty and strange/uncomfortable.
Except being a Black woman isn't strange.
It is soft, pretty, feminine, masculine, dreamy, strong, and courageous.
